Zanskar River Expedition

We will pick you up at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh, the capital of Ladakh, India, and transfer you to our hotel. Enjoy some downtime to rest, have showers, eat, and visit Leh market if you have the energy. Our group will join together for dinner, team introductions, and a fun orientation meeting. Drink copious amounts of water en route, as flying and traveling will certainly dehydrate you. Self-care begins immediately ;)

We will tour some of Leh's most remarkable and sacred sites, including Leh Palace, a historical gem displaying the region’s rich heritage; Shey Monastery, with Buddhist architecture and spiritual significance; Thikse Monastery, perched on a hill offering panoramic views; and, finally, Hemis Monastery, known for its vibrant festivals and intricate murals.​ After dinner, there will be time for last-minute shopping at the Leh market.

This morning, we head westward towards Kargil. Our first stop along the way is Nimu—the confluence of the Zanskar River with the mighty Indus River. We then visit the fort at Basgo and the 14th-century painted caves at Saspol. Our route then leads us to Khalsi, where the road crosses the Indus River, gradually winding its way up to the beautiful gompa (monastery) at Lamayuru. Continuing our adventure, we travel over the high-altitude passes of Fotu La (4108 meters) and Namika La (3700 meters) to reach the charming village of Mulbekh marking the transition to a predominantly Muslim area.  From here, we take the rugged road southward to Kargil ascending the Suru Valley into Zanskar—our destination for the day.  We settle into our peaceful accommodations, take our last showers, and complete any remaining tasks as we eagerly anticipate venturing into the backcountry tomorrow. Our week ahead promises adventurous experiences!

Our winding route leads us through the picturesque Muslim villages of Panikar and Parkachik. As we ascend, the towering 7000-meter snow-capped peaks—Nun and Kun—loom majestically. Hanging glaciers cling to the mountainsides, reaching down like frozen rivers. Beautiful meadows stretch out, dotted with wildflowers, inviting us to step beyond the ordinary. As we approach our destination, the Buddhist Gelukpa monastery of Rangdum emerges—a haven of serenity. Prayer flags fly in silent conversation with the wind. We pause, absorbing the spiritual energy that permeates the air. Then we arrive at our cozy guest house for relaxation, or for the intrepid souls among us; an optional hike awaits—a chance to take in the vast meadows, where wild yaks graze and elusive snow leopards leave their tracks.

As we travel to the river put in, we traverse the Pensi La, a mountain pass that grants us passage to the realm of giants. Look up as the peaks tower and pierce the sky. The ancient Drung Durung glacier nourishes the Zanskar River below. During the descent, the Stod (or Doda) River becomes our companion as we pass through Zanskari villages peeking from the folds of the valley. Each village whispers secrets—of resilience, of survival against the wild elements. Later, on the horizon, lies Padum—the capital of Zanskar. Tonight, our canvas camp awaits in Remala at the river’s edge. The crackle of campfires, the scent of pine, and the symphony of stars—keep us company.

Class: II

Our rafts await, ready to carry us through the heart of this rugged wilderness. Today’s river section is a gentle introduction for our first paddle through beautiful turquoise waters of the Zanskar River. The 6000-meter peaks tower above us and stand as silent witnesses to our journey. In the afternoon, on the banks, Karsha Gompa appears—a sanctuary of prayer flags and ancient wisdom. Our camp is waiting for us nestled among the boulders. We have a choice: a leisurely hike around camp or a pilgrimage to Karsha Gompa. Our local chef conjures amazing food over the campfire, and we relax to the sound of this beautiful river.

Class: III

After a leisurely morning start, we embark on an exhilarating rafting adventure from Karsha to Honyo / Pidmo. This scenic 25 km stretch features thrilling Class II and III rapids, perfect for both beginners and seasoned paddlers. As we navigate the river, we’ll acclimate to the altitude, hone our paddling skills, and savor a delicious lunch on the water. Once we reach camp, free time awaits—a chance to soak in the natural beauty and unwind.

Class:  III +

After packing camp and enjoying a hearty breakfast, we embark on an exhilarating 25 km rafting journey to Nyeraka—a Class III section of the river. As we navigate the waterway, the gorge dramatically narrows, revealing a rapid that forms at the canyon’s entrance. This rugged landscape is akin to a Grand Canyon in its own right. Our day concludes as we pitch camp in the picturesque gorge below Nyerak village, where free time awaits until dinner is served.

This morning, we start the day with a leisurely sleep-in, followed by a hearty breakfast. Then, we choose our own adventure: explore the charming Nyerak village on a scenic hike or unwind beneath the soothing shade of willow trees at our campsite. For those seeking refreshment, a campsite stream awaits for a quick wash-up before a delightful dinner. Embrace the tranquillity of this relaxing day!

Class: IV

Today is our longest rafting day in hours spent on the river through the heart of the Zanskar. This classic white-water day features continuous Class III rapids, with a few thrilling Class IV sections where the river narrows within the canyon. As we navigate the waterway, awe-inspiring rock formations and spires surround us, creating a vivid palette of colors. Our journey culminates at the confluence of the Markha river with the Zanskar, where we set up camp. Enjoy free time until dinner—a perfect way to unwind after an adrenaline-filled day.

Class: IV

Today is our longest rafting adventure in distance through Class III/IV white water. As we navigate the Zanskar River, we’ll pass the charming village of Chilling and encounter heart-pounding rapids. Picture the Zanskar plunging out of its rugged canyon to join forces with the mighty Indus at Nimu. After this adrenaline-fueled journey, return to Leh, where a hot shower awaits before your well-deserved celebratory dinner!

Today you have two options: You will either be saying goodbye to Leh as you depart early for your flight to Delhi OR you will continue to the enchanting Nubra Valley. Nubra Valley is a mesmerizing oasis nestled 150 km north of Leh. Originally known as Ldumra (the valley of flowers), it’s where the Shyok River converges with the Nubra or Siachan River. At an average altitude of 10,000 ft., this high-altitude desert boasts rare precipitation and sparse vegetation—except along riverbeds, where life flourishes. Wheat, barley, peas, mustard, and an array of fruits thrive. Here, the Balti people thrive, their faith rooted in Shia and Sufia Islam. Venture northward, and the majestic Siachen Glacier awaits. To the northwest, the Sasser Pass and the legendary Karakoram Pass forge connections with Xinjiang ancient trade routes. Non-locals tread cautiously, for Hundar guards the border into the Balti area. In the nearby village of Baigdandu, a fascinating tale unfolds residents with striking blue eyes, auburn hair, and rosy cheeks defy the typical Mongoloid features of Ladakh. Legend whispers of a Greek tribe drawn here in search of Jesus Christ’s tomb—a mystical legacy etched into the land. And from these very goats, the world receives the famed Pashmina shawls.

Rise with the sun in Leh and buckle up for an adrenaline-pumping journey. We’re heading to the legendary Khardung La pass, standing tall at a dizzying 5,602 meters—the highest motorable road on Earth! Feel the thrill as we navigate hairpin bends, surrounded by snow-capped peaks. Nubra Valley awaits! jnm ,As we descend into Nubra, the landscape transforms. Stark mountains give way to lush green valleys. The Nubra River meanders through ancient villages, where time seems to stand still. Our lodge awaits, nestled amidst apricot orchards. But don’t rest yet—there’s a sunset to chase!

Rise early and hit the road. Today, we’re exploring the hidden gems of Nubra. First stop: Sumur. Here, the Shyok River winds through golden sands, creating a desert oasis. Picture this: Bactrian camels—majestic, double-humped—grazing by the riverbanks. Next, we venture to Hundar and Deskit. Ancient monasteries cling to cliffs, echoing tales of enlightenment. Hundar’s rugged beauty captivates, while Deskit’s prayer flags flutter in the Himalayan breeze.

Breakfast fuels our ascent back to Leh via Khardung La. The views? Mind-blowing. We’ll pause at Shanti Stupa—a white marvel perched atop a "hill". From here, Leh sprawls below, a patchwork of ancient stupas and modern life. As the sun dips, the town glows in hues of gold and crimson. It’s a moment to breathe, to absorb the magic. Our celebratory dinner awaits, where we’ll toast to remote adventure, camaraderie, and the indomitable spirit of the mountains.
